The head or pressure requirements for your water fall will effect the size motor you order. You will need to know the height and water useage of the waterfall. Order some with extra capacity to make up for water filters that can become clogged with time. You still want your water fall to work well. I would consider two seperate pumps. The filter on the bottom and the waterfall to gather water from closer to the top so that it will become clogged less often.
The amount of water flowing in your waterfall is up to your personal tastes. A small trickle flowing and dripping over rocks can be just as soothing and aesthetically pleasing as a stronger flow. A 1000 gph pump can produce a waterfall one foot wide. A 2000 gph pump can produce a waterfall 2 ft wide, and so on. Gravel is an brilliant filter.
You might want two pumps, one for the waterfall, and one for the filter.
